Mike Hanson | Sonoma Tubbs Fire Victim

Mike's Story

On October 9th, 2017, our dear friend, Mike Hanson, was one of the victims of the horrific Tubbs fire in Santa Rosa. Like so many, he lost his home but unfortunately he lost so much more. His daughter, Christina, who was in a wheel chair was not able to escape the fast moving fire. Mike escaped by foot with his dog. He was saved by his neighbor who brought Mike to the hospital.

Mike is now being cared for at the Bothin Burn Center at St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco. He has 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 30% of his body. He has already gone through multiple surgeries and skin graftings. He has many more to come and a long way to recovery.

My wife Jean and I met Mike at one of our open studios. Like us, he is a glass artist. He had just moved to Santa Rosa and he had a small glassblowing and lamp working studio in a converted barn on his property. We started blowing glass together at his studio 6 years ago. I would make the small pieces we sell at our open studios there.

This October when it was time for our Art Trails Open Studios we decided to donate 100% of the sales of the cups I made with Mike at his studio. After selling out of cups the first weekend, I put a call out to our glass blower friends in the East Bay. So many people donated cups they made.

We raised close to $4000 for Mike in 4 days of Art Trails!

People were so moved by his story they wanted to help. Many gave extra to help Mike. That is when we got the idea for buyacupformike.com. At buyacupformike.com you can buy a cup, while supplies last, and send Mike a message of love and support. He has so far to go to heal. He needs our help.
